Is it really almost Spring??

Well, our camera is on the fritz (it likes to conveniently drain our batteries right before any photo opp), but thankfully our video camera is not. So only videos for you all this time.

Ellie is now 9 months old! It is fun to watch her personality come out more... she continues to be a happy, calm, gentle, sweet girl. She is starting to be more aware now of mom and dad in a room full of people. Nonetheless, Ellie continues to love meeting and smiling at new people after about a 1 minute stare-down of checking them out.

She is really enjoying solids and I'm (Amy) having lots of fun filling up our fridge/freezer weekly with new blenderized concoctions for her to eat up. This weeks menu features a banana-peach blend that she has mixed with oatmeal for breakfast and for dinner/lunch she has her choice of broccoli-tofu or brown rice-spinach-black beans. Her pincer grasp is getting more and more refined which means we have to vacuum WAY more often because she picks up every little fuzz on the carpet. She can also bring her sippy cup up to her mouth, although she continues to prefer us holding a glass to her mouth and her slurping it up.

Last week she had her first trip in the swimming pool with friends Alli and Aurelia. We thought she'd love it since she enjoys her bath time so much, but she was a bit overwhelmed by the bigness of it all. She was like a little monkey the whole time, holding onto my neck. But she did start to smile after a while :) We'll keep trying- it's a great "out of the house" activity for us. From 3-4pm on weekdays it's "happy hr swim" which is $2 per person over age 1 :) and the pool is fabulous- it has a nice big shallow end with a soft bottom and little fountains for the kids to play in that shoot out of the pool.

Here's some clips of her latest skills:

Ellie is getting closer and closer to crawling. She is really quite efficient at cruising across the room now to get to her favorite things-- our TV cabinet, the shoe rack, or the long black laptop cord. She regularly rocks back and forth like this. And will sometimes do downward dog pose (where she lifts her bottom way up in the air and forms a triangle with her body) and also likes to lay on her side and strike a little pose. Some of our friends suggested we make a "Yoga Time with Ellie" video. Maybe :)

If you're happy and your know it, surprise!

Ellie started clapping this last week. This first clip was taken on Tuesday and in this one she's copying me while I clap. The next one taken on Thursday, I just started singing the song and she clapped on her own! She even adds her own surprise ending. It was very exciting developmentally for me to see! :) It's her first really clear coordinated motor movement associated with a word/phrase!! Babies are so cool!!

And in the other Lowe family news, David and I are starting to house hunt! We're very very excited :) After hearing from multiple multiple people that "now's a good time to buy" we decided to look into it, and lo and behold found out that now would be a good time for us. We're looking in the North Seattle/Shoreline area and would appreciate your prayers. We're in a great spot right now, in that there's really no time pressure on us- if we find something soon, great, and if not, that's okay too. But I do secretly hope to be in a house before her 1st birthday ;) and in time to do planting for summer fruits and veggies :)

Welcome Titus!

Ellie's first cousin (also, Amy and David's first nephew) was born this last Friday, February 6.

Ellie says, "He's so cute, I could eat him up! In fact I think I will!"

Here is a real photo :)

Moving Around

Here's Ellie's latest progress with "crawling". Spoons and other shiny objects continue to be the best motivator!

7 wonderful months!

Ellie's 7 months old today, which is CRAZY. 7 mo feels so much closer to a year than 6 mo did... sort of like how 26 feels much closer to 30 than 25 did for me. And in honor of being 7 months, Ellie has decided to have 7 teeth. They just keep coming!!

We transitioned pretty well back to our quiet quiet apartment :) Ellie is taking her usual 2 naps a day so I'm back to working while she naps, and David is back full swing to teaching with trainings, staff meetings, etc. Every time we go away and stay overnight at a house we come back with the house-crazies... which are characterized by both of us thinking about how great it would be to live in place with more than 3 windows and a sliding door, a place with no elevator (as cool as Ellie will think that is when she's a bit older), aka a house. David and I are "investigating" the home ownership process just to see if it's feasible- we've heard "it's a good time to buy" but want to see if that applies to us, too.

Ellie's eating is getting better- in fact tonight she actually leaned forward to get another spoonful of her peach-oatmeal-banana mush. The doctor had said to let her "play with her food" since she wasn't expressed much interest in eating it, which after some experimentation we were able to take to mean smearing a giant rice paddle with baby food and letting her suck on it.

Another method of food play has been giving her a rice cracker smothered in baby food:

And finally, my favorite, and hers: just giving her spoons! She enjoys feeding herself, so we figure why not indulge her!

I'm glad eating is getting easier and that after 2 weeks straight of mutliple exposures to this peach-oatmeal-banana mush she's finally deciding she wants to eat it!

Ellie's doing great sitting up now too. It's fun also to see her imitation skills growing- she's blowing raspberries now (David regrets my teaching her this.... it's good fine motor lip control though!) and also is banging things together. I was amazed that she did this after my showing her and physically assisting her through it just a few times. Babies' brains are amazing!! I can't believe how quick she's "getting" things.

Crawling is definitely near breakthrough. She's tucking her knees in more and lifting her butt up in the air, and also is able to scootch herself backwards, and pivot her body to the side with her hands. Ellie's got the "intentional roll to get an object" thing down. She really likes spoons... and really just shiny things (a great early affinity to jewelry and technology):) so we figured we'd tempt her and see what happened!

This is my favorite recent photo of her, and it requires a bit of an explanation. We've been trying to get Ellie on a more regular bed time of 8pm, and we let her just cry/play in her crib for a while, checking in on her every so often. Well, this was what we saw when we came in. Somehow she'd gotten her arm out of her sleeve. Completely. The neck was a little loose, but it never occurred to me that she would be able to PULL HER ARM OUT. Crazy girl.

We sure love this girl!! It's hard not to.

Ellie's first christmas, take 2.

So... I was in a stupor last night while posting to what I thought was Ellie's blog.  Instead I posted to David and my blog.  Instead of reposting it on here (because it has like 8 videos), here's the link:
